About In this small write up, Chaya M S shares her experience of the initiation into MTTS program which was held from 26, January 2026 to 31, January 2026 at IIT Dharwad.
Mathematics is a game played according to certain rules with meaningless marks on paper." — David Hilbert
From 26th to 31st January, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the MTTS (Mathematics Training and Talent Search) camp at IIT Dharwad. Our journey began on 25th January when we left Mysore, and we returned on 1st February carrying not just notes, but a completely new perspective on mathematics.
I was selected after simply applying, without knowing how transformative the experience would become. The camp focused on the fundamentals of mathematics and introduced a refreshing way of teaching that could make anyone fall in love with the subject again. Instead of asking us to rely on textbooks, the instructors encouraged us to close our books, listen carefully, and truly understand what was happening. We were constantly prompted to ask questions such as: Why does this work? Is it an axiom, or can it be proven? This approach made topics like linear algebra, sets, functions, and mathematical statements feel alive and meaningful.
Each day required nearly seven hours of deep focus. Initially, it felt challenging, but gradually the rigor turned into excitement. A popular slang among students was, “WWASA?” — What Will Ananth Sir Ask? This captured the curiosity and anticipation we felt before every session. After each one-hour lecture, we had 20–30 minutes of discussion, allowing us to explore ideas further and learn from one another, which made the entire experience even more engaging.
On the fourth day, we had a self-assessment session. What made it unique was that our marks were never discussed. Instead, the mentors simply asked, “Do you know what you did wrong? Do you know how to fix it?” This shifted the focus from grades to growth and self-awareness — a lesson far more valuable than any score.
Beyond academics, the camp gifted me meaningful friendships. Knowing that we might not meet again, we spoke openly, sharing chaotic ideas and sometimes strange but hilarious examples to understand complex concepts. These conversations created an environment where learning felt natural and joyful.
Personally, this camp changed the way I think. It taught me the power of silence — the ability to sit with a problem, understand it internally, and experience the quiet happiness of solving it without seeking external validation.
Ironically, I have never considered myself a strong student in mathematics; in fact, the lowest marks I have ever received were in this subject. However, during my 10th grade, I challenged myself to improve, turning mathematics into a competition with myself. Every solved problem brought a sense of victory.
For me, mathematics has always been like a game: if you fail a level, you simply try again — and the bonus is the experience you gain along the way. The MTTS camp helped me recognize my current level while equipping me with sharper tools to progress further. More importantly, it reminded me that mathematics is not just about reaching the destination but appreciating the journey itself.
Like gamers, we never truly quit — we simply restart. And after this camp, I feel more ready than ever to continue playing the beautiful game of mathematics.
Chaya M. S. is a fourth-semester B.Sc. PCM student with a strong interest in science and mathematics currently studying in Sarada Vilas College, Mysuru. She views mathematics as a game that fosters growth and sharpens her thinking skills. Curious and eager to learn, she is currently focused on her studies and exploring her interests, while remaining open to the opportunities the future may bring.
