From Determination to IIT Palakkad: Sudarshan’s Journey

Mr. Sudarshan, a student of B.Sc. Physics and Mathematics (2023–2026) at Sarada Vilas College, comes from a small village near the Karnataka border. His journey is a story of determination, perseverance and the power of a clear goal.

When Sudarshan joined Sarada Vilas College for his undergraduate studies, the initial days were not easy. Like many students beginning a new phase of academic life, he had to take time to adapt to the new environment and demands of higher education. However, he soon found his rhythm, steadily improved his academic performance and, importantly, developed a strong interest in Mathematics.

Early in his Bachelor's degree, Sudarshan made up his mind to pursue higher studies in Mathematics. What began as an aspiration gradually became a firm goal. He remained committed to it throughout his undergraduate years, putting in consistent effort and working towards the IIT JAM examination.

His hard work bore fruit. In 2026, Sudarshan successfully cleared the IIT JAM examination and secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Palakkad, Kerala, where he will pursue his M.Sc. in Mathematics.

Sudarshan's achievement is more than just a success in an entrance examination. It is a reflection of perseverance, gradual progress and the importance of staying committed to one's determination. His journey reminds us that success need not always be immediate; with a clear goal, sustained effort and the willingness to improve, remarkable transformations are possible.

The Department of Mathematics and Sarada Vilas College are proud of Sudarshan's achievement and wish him every success as he begins this exciting new chapter at IIT Palakkad. We hope that his journey will inspire many more students of the college to dream big and work towards their aspirations.

The Impact of an Outreach Initiative

At this juncture, we would also like to acknowledge the valuable support of Prof. Praveen C. Ramamurthy, Professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and an alumnus of Sarada Vilas College. His association with the college has contributed meaningfully to creating opportunities and awareness among our students.

In 2023, Prof. Ramamurthy supported Sarada Vilas College by facilitating the IISc outreach programme on the orientation to GATE and JAM. The programme, which has continued as an annual initiative, introduces students to these prestigious national-level examinations and highlights the opportunities they open up for higher education at leading institutions across the country.

The impact of such an initiative is perhaps best reflected not merely in the number of students who attend an orientation programme, but in the aspirations it inspires. Following these orientations, an increasing number of students have been coming forward to apply for examinations such as GATE and JAM and to explore opportunities for higher studies at premier institutions.

For students, applying is the first step towards success. An orientation can provide awareness; a goal can provide direction; but it is perseverance and sustained effort that ultimately turn an aspiration into an achievement.

Sudarshan's journey is one such story—and we hope it will be the beginning of many more.
